Beer Low Gluten Testing

Welcome to the site. Since you landed here, I imagine you are a beer lover and possibly have avoided beer, like me,  due to an intolerance, allergy or sensitivity to one of the grains in beer. Also like me, you may be seeking answers about wheat free or gluten free beer options. After becoming allergic to wheat, I sought ways that I could understand the content of wheat in certain products, most especially beer. Why? Because I love beer!

I found a way to test for gluten in beer and have compiled the outcomes in a table. Click on the image to the right to get to the full set.

There are several test kits available for gluten testing, but selecting one can be tricky. Initially, I had a bit of difficulty finding a testing  kit just for wheat and finally honed in on one that would be suitable. This first test kit uses the R5 antibody. According to the instructions and information that came in the kit, It does also test for barley and rye.

NERD disclosure

As a disclosure, while I am a huge nerd, I am not in fact a scientist or a doctor, and while I followed the test kit instructions exactly, it was not done in a lab or with any specialized equipment other than the kit and a pipette. If you are Celiac or have an extreme outcome from consuming wheat proteins or any gluten, please do not take the test results to mean the beer is okay for you. I would assume it is not.

So I ran my first experiment (April 2018).  The kit tests for 5 ppm (parts-per-million, 10−6).  I started with Guinness Draught, the outcomes of this test are posted under the Posts Page. The results are very exciting. Check out the table! It has quite a few beers now …I will continue to add as I test. You can also check out the summary table of results on the Test Outcomes Page.

Enjoy!
